Islam and Koran on trail as Arabist Hans Jansen testimony read out in Wilders defense - Video

Hans Jansen's testimony most definitely will come as a shock to some. It is a lot to read through if you don't understand Dutch ~ but it is well worth it.

The West dominates, but according to Muslims Islam should do this.

They are used to looking down on non-Muslims ~ called ignorant, non-Muslims are afforded only a 'protected' second class status in the Muslim world. But then here's the West ~ like a billboard with flashing lights ~ where non-Muslims are running extremely successful societies. So Muslims are thinking, that they have to assert this Islamic rule or order over the western non-Muslim peoples ~ as they do with their non-Muslims.

Bomb concealed in printer on flight from Dubai - Photos

  • Device 1 intercepted at East Midlands Airport in the UK. It was posted via UPS in Yemen and is believed to have been flown via Dubai and Cologne
  • Device 2 intercepted in Dubai after flying on two Qatar Airways passenger jets from Yemen. It was posted via freight firm FedEx
  • Both devices are addressed to synagogues in Chicago, and contain PETN explosives stuffed into printer cartridges
  • Other UPS cargoes are searched in Newark, Philadelphia and New York as the alert spreads
  • The UK government later says it believes Device 1 was designed to go off on board the plane

Baghdad Catholic church hostage situation ends in bloodbath - Video

At least 37 people have been killed after Iraqi security forces stormed a Catholic church in central Baghdad to free dozens of hostages being held by gunmen there, security sources say.

Twenty-five hostages were among the dead, along with seven members of the Iraqi security forces and at least five of the attackers, they told the BBC.

About 100 people had been inside Our Lady of Salvation for an evening mass.

The gunmen had reportedly demanded the release of jailed al-Qaeda militants.

The local TV station, al-Baghdadiya, said it had received a phonecall from someone claiming to be one of the attackers, who said they were from the Islamic State of Iraq, a Sunni militant umbrella group to which al-Qaeda in Iraq belongs.

Reports said the attackers were not Iraqis, but foreign Arabs.

The attack came two days after a suicide attack at a cafe in Diyala province left 21 people dead.

Explosions
Residents of Baghdad's Karada district, where the attack took place, first heard a loud explosion at about 1700 (1400 GMT), followed gunfire.

Police said a group of armed men began by attacking the Iraq Stock Exchange building, and then took over the Catholic church just across the road, clashing with guards and killing some of them.

Security forces later surrounded the church and sealed off the area, with helicopters hovering overhead. Then they stormed the building.

Witnesses nearby said they then heard two explosions from inside the church and more shooting. They also reported seeing US troops on the ground and US military helicopters hovering above the scene, but the extent of their involvement is not yet clear.

"The operation has finished and we released all the hostages," said the commander of the police in south-eastern Baghdad, Brig-Gen Ali Ibrahim.

The BBC's Jim Muir in Baghdad says there are different figures from different sources for the number of hostages and attackers involved, and how many of each were killed or captured.

The US military told the Reuters news agency that between seven and 10 hostages, and seven Iraqi security personnel were killed, as well as five to seven attackers. It put the number of wounded at 30, while sources told the BBC that 56 were hurt.

Earlier reports meanwhile said that two security guards at the stock exchange had been killed before the attackers occupied the church.

There are about 1.5 million Christians from ancient denominations in Iraq.

Many churches have been bombed in recent years - including Our Lady of Salvation in August 2004 - and priests kidnapped and killed, but there has never been a prolonged hostage situation like this before, our correspondent adds.

Here comes the sun [Photos]

Big pic.

On October 20, amateur astronomer Alan Friedman got a little face time with the sun.

Using his own telescope, Friedman captured a highly detailed photograph of our solar system's star using a filter to capture Hα (H-alpha) light waves, which Discover Magazine defines as "the light of Hydrogen."

The images above might look like a swirling sea of fire, but what's shown is actually light from the chromosphere, a thin layer that sits between the photosphere and the corona, the the sun's outermost layer.

Discover Magazine explains how Friedman captured light from the chromosphere:
The Sun's surface puts out light at all wavelengths, but the surface isn't solid. It's a gas, and it tapers off with height. Normally, a thin gas in space emits light at very specific colors as electrons jump from one energy level to another in the individual atoms. But compressed gas in the thicker, denser part of the Sun mashes together all those energies, spreading them out, so it emits white light (that layer of the Sun is called the photosphere). Above that layer, where the gas is thinner (in a layer called the chromosphere), the hydrogen does emit light at specific colors. One of these, Hα, is in the red part of the spectrum, and in fact hot, thin hydrogen emits very strongly in Hα.

By plopping a filter in front of a telescope, you can block a lot of the light from the photosphere but let light from the chromosphere through. That's what Alan Friedman did -- he used a filter that let through a very narrow range of colors centered on Hα -- to get this stunning picture. Well that, plus quite a bit of image processing! But everything you're seeing there is real, and is happening on the Sun.

The dark spots that are visible in Friedman's photos are sunspots, and the emissions visible around the edge of the sun are solar prominences. View the images for a close look at the solar action.

Alan Friedman's photography has been featured by NASA and SpaceWeather.com. Visit his gallery to see more amazing images of space. Also, view our slideshow of photographs from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory to see massive eruptions on the surface of the sun.

Cat Steven on BBC Program Discussing Salman Rushdie's Death - Video

At the Washington Sanity Rally ~ Yusef Islam/ Cat Stevens says 'Peace' to a big applause, but peace in Islam only comes through conquest. There is Dar al Islam, the realm of Islam or the conquered lands, verses Dar al Harb or the unconquered or realm of war.

This is not the 70's 'Peace'!

Ministry: Christian Group Adopt a Terrorist for Prayer

What are terrorists afraid of ~ not pleasing their God. The idea being to get God's ultimate favor by becoming a martyr or committing a violent act to spread Islam. If not a change of mind then perhaps a change of God!

Muhammad was never able to convince people as Jesus could, by talking and listening, performing a few miracles ~ frustrated he picked up the sword. Prior to this Muhammad only had 100 followers. And along with the sword the accounts in the Koran changed. Where the verses are contradictory ~ the solution is that the violent and more extreme ones ~ replace the moderate ones.

Look at the changes Muhammed made to the Kaaba religion, getting rid of the Gods, and most sensitively the Goddesses [Book of Idols ~ says he requested this in prayer, because they were women and no woman should come between he, as a man [or male messenger] and the Kaaba's Supreme God]. So was it Allah who told Muhammad to take up the sword ~ to convert or to not only ~ spread but to change his message ~ or was it Muhammad who told Allah?

Should we adopt a terrorist and pray for them?

That’s the idea behind a Christian ministry called (not surprisingly) Adopt-a-Terrorist for Prayer. An excerpt from their website:

“Where is the Christian response to terrorism? If the struggle against violence done in the name of Islam is primarily spiritual, then defeating it requires a spiritual response.

This site features FBI and State Department identified terrorists and terrorism sponsors. Terrorism inspires fear. According to Jesus, the antidote to fear is love.

When we hate, we are reactive victims. When we love we seize the initiative. Love for country helps soldiers to risk their lives. Love for children enables parents to discipline them without being intimidated. Love for us took Jesus to the cross. Love for enemies will give courage to face, overcome, and transform them and the environment that breeds them.”

Obama to visit largest mosque in Indonesia

Istiqlal Mosque

So much for the Sikhs! Tight schedule ~ and rumor has it ~ the visit might make him look like a Muslim!!

India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is a Sikh.

Or.. perhaps it is that he doesn't want to offend Islam!

(RNS) President Obama plans to visit one of the world's largest mosques during his trip to Indonesia in November, the White House announced Thursday (Oct. 28).

The visit to Istiqlal Mosque on Nov. 10 will precede a speech about U.S. outreach to Muslims throughout the world, said Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser.

Rhodes said the mosque visit does not reflect an attempt to overcome the recent controversy over whether an Islamic community center should be built near Ground Zero.

"When we planned to go to Indonesia in March, we planned to go to this same mosque," Rhodes said, adding that the president has visited prominent mosques when he has traveled to other countries with Muslim majorities.

The speech in Indonesia will likely draw a large crowd, administration officials said, due to the president's popularity in that country. He lived several years of his childhood in Indonesia with his mother and stepfather.

The announcement of the mosque visit came the day after the White House denied reports that Obama will avoid a Sikh shrine while visiting India earlier in the trip because the required head covering might have fanned false rumors about his Christian faith.

Gitmo former 'child soldier' sentenced to 8 years

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba [AP] — A military jury in Guantanamo says a former teenage al-Qaida fighter should serve 40 years in prison for war crimes, a symbolic decision because a plea deal caps his sentence at eight years.

Omar Khadr earlier pleaded guilty to five war crimes charges in a plea bargain.

The sentencing jury was not told about the plea deal before it deliberated nearly nine hours over two days at the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

The widow of an American soldier killed by Khadr cheered as the judge imposed the eight-year sentence.

Khadr, a 24-year-old Canadian, is the last Western prisoner at Guantanamo. The U.S. says he will be sent back to his homeland after one more year in U.S. custody.

WE WANT TO TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK

“THEY ARE TAKING AWAY MY AMERICA”

It was last year during one of those now infamous TOWN HALL MEETINGS where the elected representative wanted to meet with people in his district and have a meaningful exchange of ideas and feedback from his constituents that this woman in the back of the room rose and tearfully went into a diatribe about how she was afraid and her voice cracking with anguish and pain declared “they are taking away my America”

I will not forget that although I have forgotten which Town Hall meeting it was and exactly when it happened because there have been so many others just like that encounter that it is all melding together into one big, incoherent message that resonates with Teahadists and which Republicans are not willing to repudiate.

It is one of the many askew and repugnant signs of that old ugly snake raising its head: the snake of racism, intolerance, xenophobia, homophobia and religious fanaticism. Only these Teahadists don’t really know it, they are sadly, too ignorant to realize that this is really the issue as they carry a flag with another snake that reads: “don’t tread on me”

To “take back America” from whom; take it back to where? I think that any of the Tea Baggers would be hard-pressed to answer those two basic questions. It is also one significant point that they want “LESS GOVERNMENT, SMALLER GOVERNMENT OR NO GOVERNMENT AT ALL”, they want “MORE FREEDOM”. And another one was: ‘LISTEN TO US”

It is then that you have to ask: Less government from what? From having regulations? Less government from interfering in our private sex lives? Less government to offer safety nets? What is it exactly what that less government entails?

You also question this mantra of “SMALLER GOVERNMENT” What in the hell are they talking about? “Government is too big” they will repeat like parrots. But our government is as big as it needs to be if you consider that we are arguably the number one super power in this world of ours. To have anything else is a defeatist, self-destructive outlook that would make our country a third rated, third world nation.

And then there is the beauty: “MORE FREEDOM” More freedom to do what? More freedom for whom? Are you now deprived of some freedom that you have to go out and carry a sign protesting that deprivation? Is there some freedom you stand to lose if your Tea Bag Party does not win? I dare say NO.

I would also like to say to these Teahadists: I will start LISTENING TO YOU when you have SOMETHING TO SAY.

In the blog

http://www.ourfuture.org/users/terrance-heath

Terrance Heath puts it very eloquently: This is not your country. Nor is it mine. That we were born here, along with our forebears hardly matters. This has been the message of the Tea Party since its incorporation — and of conservatism itself for more than a generation — to anyone who doesn't' fit their demographic, in terms of race, religion, politics, etc.

It is most often expressed by the Tea Party's declared desire to "Take our country back." This is not your country. Nor is it mine. It's theirs, and they're "taking it back." This raises a few very important questions: "Who are they taking it from?", "Who are they taking it for?", and "How do they plan to take it?"

So, if you want to take back your America bear in mind that it is not yours to take because this is also my America, it is everybody’s America you stupid, racist, xenophobic douche bag. And I close with the insult which I feel is not even sufficiently harsh to express my disdain and repulsion for the Teahadists.

CNN: Mohamed top baby name UK - Video

The question is why are so many Muslims coming to the West?

The guy in the video says Islam is here to stay. The difference being in how Christians are treated in the Islamic world. They don't have equal rights with Muslims, in accordance with Islamic laws.

He says there is nothing to be afraid off. But look at the Islamic world ~ it has produced nothing for 1000 years. This is not nothing. And because it has not produced ~ we are seeing the influx of Muslims coming to the West to escape ~ Islamotopia's conditions.

And here they want to set up the same fantasy island ~ ruled by the Koran and not the people.

It goes to the heart of the reason why Islam failed. Look at Persia ~ there could not be a greater disaster in terms of human progress. From Cyrus to the Supreme Leader!! All after Muslims told them 'we love death more than you love your wine' ~ I'm sure the Persians put up a respectable fight ~ there was a lot of blood spilt over the years ~ but ultimately they capitulated and gave over their civilization. It is the same thing we are faced with today ~ Bin Laden and others have issued a similar threat. Though in the word wine ~ we could see art, culture, philosophy and science ~ and those who loved death ~ destroyed it. But not before claiming the Persian advancements as their own.

Islam failed to maintain these advancements ~ because its ways and its laws never created them ~ to begin with. In a few centuries too we could be looking at a broken west ~ if allowed to be operated under Islamic restrictions.

Yusuf Islam (aka Cat Stevens), accused of backing Salman Rusdie fatwah, appears at DC 'Rally to Restore Sanity' - Video

Musical performers Ozzy Osbourne (L) and Yusuf Islam are pictured on stage during the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear on the Washington Mall, October 30, 2010.

Yeah man, we should have a bit of Islam law, we just need to give up a few rights and everything will be groovy, man!!

Among those who appeared at Jon Stewart’s DC snarkfest (and attempt to suppress Democratic GOTV activists?) Rally to Restore Sanity in DC today was Yusuf Islam, the artist formerly known as Cat Stephens. Here he is: [ video below]

It’s a curious choice, to put it mildly, given Yusuf’s alleged support of the fatwah against Salman Rushdie. All audio of the words he used to allegedly support the fatwah (which he has strenuously insisted he did not do) has been removed from YouTube, apparently at the crooner’s behest. Here are some of those words spoken by an actor: [video below]

Ed Driscoll has video and audio of the actual words here. Here’s wikipedia’s summary of the Yusuf/Rushdie fatwah controversy.

And here’s Salman Rushdie’s own take, in a 2007 letter to the Telegraph, on what Yusuf meant:

Cat Stevens wanted me dead

However much Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam may wish to rewrite his past, he was neither misunderstood nor misquoted over his views on the Khomeini fatwa against The Satanic Verses (Seven, April 29). In an article in The New York Times on May 22, 1989, Craig R Whitney reported Stevens/Islam saying on a British television programme “that rather than go to a demonstration to burn an effigy of the author Salman Rushdie, ‘I would have hoped that it’d be the real thing’.”

He added that “if Mr Rushdie turned up at his doorstep looking for help, ‘I might ring somebody who might do more damage to him than he would like. I’d try to phone the Ayatollah Khomeini and tell him exactly where this man is’.”

In a subsequent interview with The New York Times, Mr Whitney added, Stevens/Islam, who had seen a preview of the programme, said that he “stood by his comments”.

Let’s have no more rubbish about how “green” and innocent this man was.

Letter from AmeriKat: Happy Halloween!

The AmeriKat adores the fall holidays. For those who know her Thanksgiving is by far the AmeriKat's favorite holiday, but running a close second is Halloween. Although she has begun noticing a growth in Halloween parties and events in the UK, no one does Halloween like the US. Costumes are plastered on our infants from the womb and grocery store aisles are devoted to crates of candy and ghoulish masks. Unlike the UK where one generally has to dress up 'scary' for the event, our costumes span the gambit of fancy dress; a mermaid, a flight attendant, a pumpkin are all acceptable attire. This Halloween, the AmeriKat had planned to go as a Savannah flapper vampire (complete with accent and all) to one of her friend's Halloween parties and so she laid her head down to take a 15 minute power nap before the preparation would begin. However, when she later awoke it was 1 AM and her Halloween fun had sadly vanquished - a lesson that there is no such thing as a Kat nap. (picture, top left - look closely and you will see the AmeriKat asleep in her jack o'lantern)

Happy Halloween from the AmeriKat!

Court squeezes all the juice from the LimeWire: Something else that has been vanquished this week is LimeWire, the music file-sharing service that is a favorite of old and young alike. Last Tuesday Manhattan federal judge Kimba Wood ordered that LimeWire be permanently shut down by disabling the "searching, downloading, uploading, file trading and/or file distribution functionality" of their file-sharing software. This injunction follows a ruling six months ago that found the company and its founder, Mark Gorton, liable for copyright infringement on a "massive scale". LimeWire is still in the process of negotiating licence deals with major record labels to legally provide music for sale with a subscription service. Following the ruling Gorton issued a statement declaring that:
"While this is not our ideal path, we hope to work with the music industry in moving forward. We look forward to embracing necessary changes and collaborating with the entire music industry in the future."
Meanwhile the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) who handled the lawsuit issued the following following statement:
"For the better part of the last decade, LimeWire and Gorton have violated the law. The court has now signed an injunction that will start to unwind the massive piracy machine that LimeWire and Gorton used to enrich themselves immensely"
Now with the issues of liability and the injunction determined, the court will now be tasked with the quantification of damages early next year that the company and Gorton will have to pay. The LimeWire injunction came shortly after the former head of Warners Music in the UK, Rob Dickins, suggested that albums should go for as little as £1, which would enable the purchase to be an impulse purchase. Others, such as Paul Quirk the head of Entertainment Retailers Association, suggested that Dickins had already benefited from the heyday of $14 albums and was too casual with his statement (see this report in Ars Technica). From courtrooms to industry meetings, everyone is struggling to put a price on music. But is a music track worth a bottle of water, or a hardback novel? Regardless of the correct answer, the court's assessment of damages in the LimeWire case next year will be far greater than either of those values.

Hell's Angels take on Alexander McQueen: What does couture house Alexander McQueen and the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club have in common? Nothing, unless you count the recent lawsuit brought by the Hells Angels in California federal court Monday against Alexander McQueen Trading Company, owned by PPR, for use of their trade mark name and mascot winged death head symbol (picture, left). The famous motorcycle group has reportedly used their name and symbol since at least 1948 and are also proprietors of a USPTO registered trade marks in classes for jewellery and clothing. For those who are unfamiliar with the Hells Angels, the gang is comprised of motorcycle enthusiasts that are admitted once strict requirements are met. The FBI classifies the Hells Angels as one of the big four motorcycle gangs with links to violence and organized crime(although the group denies this). Not exactly a group of people that you would want to rip-off....

The complaint lists a $495 four finger duster ring called the "Hell's Knuckle Duster" which includes the protected winged death head design, a $2,329 clutch (picture, right) with a similar symbol, as well as a $1,595 dress and $560 silk scarf. These garments and accessories which include similar marks of the Hells Angels would, when worn, represent membership insignia and, according to the Hells Angels' attorney, Fritz Clapp ,"anyone wearing them would be considered an imposter by club members”. Eeeek! This invokes a somewhat funny image of a woman with an incredibly expensive designer handbag being chased by the Hells Angels for trade mark infringement.

This complaint against Alexander McQueen comes at the same time costume designer Jany Temime was accused of knocking off a McQueen dress in the upcoming Harry Potter film. Temime designed a wedding dress for the marriage of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour which incorporated a phoenix bird and feather motif, which is reminiscent of McQueen's peacock dress of A/W (Autumn/Winter) 2008. The dresses both include the heads of two birds at the bodice line with their body and feathers cascading down through the skirt. It seems incredible to the AmeriKat that a cosutme designer for a prominent film would skate so close to the edge of design protection. Some investigation by the AmeriKat has come up with a question that the dress was actually authorized by Alexander McQueen, but the official story has yet to be forthcoming.

USPTO and EPO unite to develop join patent classification system: Last Monday the USPTO announced that it will be working with the EPO to establish the formulation of a joint patent classification system. Because the USPTO pre-deates the International Patent Classification (IPC) system, the US system is not alligned with many other countries. The joint classification system will be more detailed than the current IPC system to improve patent searches, which will also aim to eliminate the duplication of work between the USPTO and EPO. David Kappos, Director of the USPTO, and Benoît Battistelli, head of the EPO, issued a joint statement stating that:
"In view of the significant benefit to stakeholders of developing a transparent and harmonized approach to global classification system for patent documents; in order to make the search process more effective; and in the belief that cooperation between the two offices will facilitate progress in undertaking classification harmonization projects under the IP5 Common Hybrid Classification initiative, the USPTO and the EPO have agreed together to work toward the formation of a partnership to explore the development of a joint classification system based on the European Classification system (ECLA) that will incorporate the best classification practices of the two offices. This system would be aligned with the WIPO classification on standards and IPC structure. Accordingly, they have initiated discussions on governance and operational aspects of such a partnership"
Earlier this month the USPTO launched its second pilot of their Peer to Patent system which commenced on 24 October 2010. With the stated goal of "
enhancing government effectiveness through openness and collaboration", Peer to Patent is a system whereby the patent examination process is open to the public who can submit information, such as evidence of prior art to assist USPTO patent examiners during their examination. In the first Peer to Patent pilot over 600 items of prior art were submitted for 189 applications. The AmeriKat wonders if this could be a nice and easy way for current patent holders to 'pre-litigate' and knock patents of potential competitors out of the system. If so, is that a good or bad thing?

That Page Doesn’t Exist.. Some people think that her Twitter page was hacked, while others believe it was her choice to quit the social networking website.

What are your thoughts on Demi Lovatos’s love connection with Justin Bieber and her missing Twitter page? Do you think she’s abandoned the internet to pursue a secret love with Justin Bieber?

Agenda 21: The UN's Plan to Save the Earth

Agenda 21 is the unrighteous undertaking of the United Nations to create a global green movement to save the earth. It is a radical New Age game plan, said to be able to simultaneously slow global warming and world economic disparity woes which has gained major backing from key world leaders. One of the prominent endorsers is Jeremy Rifkin.

In Rifkin's book titled The Emerging Order, he leads you through the origins of liberal thought (from Calvin) and tries to create a sympathetic view of the liberal's obligation to save our depleted planet. To do this, he points at the ugliness of greedy, self-interested capitalism, and tries to see the righteousness of the compassionate ways of liberalism. He blames the goals and depletion of the world's natural resources on capitalism. He wants us to transition the world from the "age of growth" to the "age of scarcity," and has his game plan ready.

Rifkin's compassionate views of liberalism are not so compassionate. Many of his views are directly from the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. He's concerned about:
  • The growing world population depleting the planet. (although he doesn't promote killing people off)
  • The world's ability to produce enough food for the population.
  • The obligation of the poor to provide for the rich. (redistribution of wealth)
  • The belief that if we should spread our wealth around. Forcing the redistribution of wealth from the "have" nations to the "have not" nations. (U.S. companies moving overseas)
  • The concept of private property will shift to consumer goods and services, but not land - all being in our public duty.
  • The serious concern for global warming and the desire for a more sustainable means of living.
With the assistance and lies of Jeremy Rifkin, the United Nations has been able to adopt Agenda 21. It is a sustainable development plan for the environment, and it is our obligation to help. Here is more about the UN plan.

(YouTube link)

These people are not a group of whiners. It stems from the knowledge that the earth running out of resources and global warming is based on a lie, and it is all about the control of the population. Unfortunately, we're along for the ride!

"Effective execution of Agenda 21 will require a profound reorientation of all human society, unlike anything the world has ever experienced — a major shift in the priorities of both governments and individuals and an unprecedented redeployment of human and financial resources. This shift will demand that a concern for the environmental consequences of every human action be integrated into individual and collective decision-making at every level."
- UN Agenda 21

One last thought
One of the points in his book that I found especially disturbing are his comments on redistribution of wealth. He equated world missions with the redistribution of wealth. In a comment about Pat Robertson, one of the kings of world missions, Rifkin stated:
"...Robertson has gone much farther than the other electronic evangelists in advancing the issue of economic justice. In a recent edition in his newsletter to supporters, he called for a jubilee year, the cancellation of debts between rich and poor nations, and a greater concern over the need for all Christians to serve as good stewards, protecting God's creation and sharing God's resources equitably."  (pg. 103)
To clarify, I don't believe world missions are evil. There is a difference between sending cash to a world mission, and supporting a missionary family from your church. It is the desire of the missionary to reach a people group, whereas it is the objective of world mission to redistribute wealth.

The 22-year-old woman, named locally as Hanan al Samawi, was traced through a phone number left with a cargo company. Ali Abdullah Saleh, Yemen's president, said the information that identified her was provided by the US and the United Arab Emirates.

She was arrested at a house in a poor area in the west of Sana'a, where she is studying medicine at the university. Her mother was also arrested, but is not a prime suspect according to her lawyer.

The bomb intercepted in Britain on its way to America was designed to explode in mid-air and may have been targeted at the UK.

David Cameron said he believed the device was constructed to detonate while the aircraft was in flight.

He said a plot to blow it up over British soil could not be ruled out.

The Prime Minister's dramatic intervention came as the investigation into the plot was centring on one of al-Qaeda's most senior commanders.

US and British security officials believe Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born figurehead of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) was behind the foiled attack in which two ink cartridge bombs, posted in Yemen, were intercepted in Britain and Dubai on the way to America.

Al-Awlaki, who is in hiding in Yemen, is regarded by the CIA and MI6 as the driving force behind the transformation of AQAP from a regional group into an international terrorist organisation.

Fears of more plots emerged after investigators in Sana'a, the Yemeni capital, said they were examining 24 other suspect packages.

Mr Cameron's comments, in a televised address from Chequers shortly after 6pm, were the first suggestions that Britain could have been in the line of fire.

He said there was "no early evidence" that Britain was targeted, but added: "We believe that the device was designed to go off on the aeroplane. There is no early evidence that it was designed to go off over British soil, but, of course, we cannot rule that out."

Had the planes been brought down over populated areas, hundreds could have been killed.

In Sana'a, authorities were also questioning cargo workers at the airport and employees of shipping companies contracted to work with the freight companies FedEx and UPS.

While the devices were addressed to synagogues in Chicago, Theresa May, the Home Secretary, was the first to announce that the target for the bombs could have been the planes.

She also said the Government had launched a review of Britain's air cargo security and disclosed that all unaccompanied freight from Yemen had been stopped.

Further suspicion fell on the involvement of AQAP when Janet Napolitano, the US Homeland Security Secretary, claimed that the plot had all the hallmarks of an al-Qaeda "spectacular".

It was well orchestrated, it targeted airlines and it was designed to cause global panic and chaos.

The devices were believed to be similar to those developed by Ibrahim Hassan al Asiri, a Saudi jihadist who is thought to have designed a bomb smuggled on to a US-bound Christmas Day flight last year by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the so-called Underpants Bomber.

Asiri is also believed to have constructed a bomb that was hidden in a body cavity of his brother who blew himself up while trying to kill Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, Saudi Arabia's top counter-terrorism official, who survived the attack.

Speaking after a meeting of Cobra, the Government's emergency planning committee, Mrs May said: "I can confirm that the device was viable and could have exploded.

"The target may have been an aircraft and had it detonated the aircraft could have been brought down.

"But we do not believe that the perpetrators of the attack would have known the location of the device when they planned for it to explode.

"At this stage, we have no information to indicate another attack is imminent. The threat level is already at severe, meaning that a terrorist attack in this country is highly likely. We do not plan to change that threat level at this stage."

The Prime Minister said that he had spoken by telephone to President Saleh and the Saudi ruler, King Abdullah, as well as to Barack Obama, the US President.

Mr Cameron said: "We have to do more to cut out the cancer of al-Qaeda in Yemen and the Saudi peninsula."

The announcement brought to a head 24 hours of confusion during which Leicestershire police, at first, failed to identify explosives in a suspect package. After a device was found in Dubai, police carried out further checks and found the bomb.

Security sources told The Sunday Telegraph that an airborne attack was thought to be the terrorists' most probable tactic.

"We think it is probably a more likely scenario than others, but it's pretty convoluted. We have not yet done all the full tests," said the source.

Mobile phones can be used as the trigger to detonate a bomb, by either using the handset's internal clock as a timer or setting it to detonate when the phone receives a call or a text message.

The international terror alert was launched late on Thursday when MI6 received information from their counterparts in the Saudi Arabian intelligence services warning of a plot.

Following the tip-off, security staff discovered suspicious packages on board planes at cargo hubs at East Midlands Airport and Dubai.

The packages were addressed to synagogues in Chicago, and were on Chicago-bound cargo flights.

After examining the Dubai device, local police said: "The parcel was prepared in a professional manner where a closed electrical circuit was connected to a mobile phone SIM card hidden inside the printer. This tactic carries the hallmarks of methods used previously by terrorist organisations such as al-Qaeda."

The bomb also contained lead azide, an explosive compound that can be used in detonators, together with the powerful explosive pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN).

This is the same chemical used by Abdulmutallab in the plot to blow up a plane over Detroit on Christmas Day last year.

Following the latest discoveries, UPS jets in Philadelphia and Newark, New Jersey, were moved away from terminal buildings and two fighter jets escorted an airliner travelling into New York from Dubai.

As speculation grew on both sides of the Atlantic, President Obama broke the news that the discovery of the two devices meant the West was once again dealing with "a credible terrorist threat".

The terror alert followed calls this week from airline bosses for existing security procedures such as shoe and laptop checks to be scrapped.

The plot resembles the Lockerbie bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which also featured concealed explosives within an electronic device, a radio cassette player.

Last month, Jonathan Evans, the director general of MI5, warned in a speech that his organisation had seen a "surge" in Yemen-related case work over the past 12 months.
