Pakistan Charges Guard With Governor’s Murder: - Claims Action in Accordance with Koran

A Pakistani court has charged a police guard with the murder of a governor who spoke out against the country's blasphemy laws.

Mumtaz Qadri's closed hearing took place Monday in the city of Rawalpindi, where a group of his supporters gathered outside the jail.

Qadri has admitted shooting and killing the governor of Punjab province, Salman Taseer, last month in Islamabad, while serving as his bodyguard.

The governor had called for a repeal of Pakistan's blasphemy law after a Christian woman was sentenced to death last year for allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammad.

On Monday, Qadri told the court he acted in accordance with the teachings of the Koran.

An evidence hearing is set for Qadri on February 26.
