Last American WWI veteran buried

The last American survivor of World War I has been laid to rest. Frank Buckles died at the age of 110 at his home in Charlestown, W. Va. on February 27.
During what was then known as the "Great War," Buckles served as a U.S. Army ambulance driver in Europe, rising to the rank of corporal before the war ended in 1918.
Buckles also served in World War II, as s a ship's officer on merchant vessels. He was captured by the Japanese in the Philippines during World War II and held prisoner of war for more than three years before he was freed by U.S. troops.
Before his burial, Buckle lay in repose in the Memorial Chapel at Arlington. A slow stream of mourners filed through to pay their respects. A soldier stood guard at Buckles' casket, reports ABC News.
A crowd of nearly 200 family, friends and mourners gathered at Buckles' gravesite for the burial service.
Buckles campaigned for a national memorial to honor the American veterans of World War I and served as an honorary chairman for the World War I Memorial Foundation. There are only two remaining veterans of WWI left in the entire world, both men having served in the British Army.
