After a false start last month, Sarah Palin is again set to headline a May 2 fundraiser in metro Denver.
This time, the former Alaska governor, vice presidential candidate and reality-television personality is scheduled to speak at "Tribute to the Troops with Sarah Palin" at Colorado Christian University.
John Andrews, who leads the Centennial Institute think tank at the Lakewood college, said the school has a signed contract for the event and is prepared to deal with any publicity — positive or negative — that the conservative star might bring with her.
"Her staff has told us to expect an interesting ride, in terms of static," Andrews said. "We know what's down that road, and we are eager to go there."
On Feb. 4, the Sharon K. Pacheco Foundation announced that Palin would be the featured speaker at a May 2 benefit in Glendale for military families but canceled the event less than 48 hours later, blaming threats and negative feedback.
Area law enforcement agencies said they were unaware of such threats. The Pacheco Foundation could not be reached for further comment. Financial records for the organization showed assets of less than $2,500 for 2009.
Tickets for the event at Glendale's Infinity Park Center were priced at $185 but were quickly slashed to half that.
Andrews said the Tea Party icon will not receive a speaking fee for her appearance at CCU. Palin's fee sometimes exceeds $100,000, the Washington Speaker's Bureau said last month.
Andrews said he doesn't think security concerns derailed the Pacheco Foundation event and that Colorado came off "not looking great" because of a "perception that someone important could be chased away.
"Certainly, there is a warm welcome for her on our campus," Andrews said.
The May 2 date coincides with the scheduled Republican presidential candidates' debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif.
That event, to be moderated by Politico editor John Harris and NBC news anchor Brian Williams, is billed as the kickoff to the race for the 2012 GOP nomination for president.
Andrews said he knew of the scheduled debate but didn't think Palin would attend it.
"Presumably, this means she will be doing (the fundraiser) instead of any other engagement on the second," Andrews said.
Although the date for the debate is set, none of the likely Republican candidates is yet confirmed for attendance, said Melissa Giller, director of communications at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Foundation.
All ticket proceeds from Palin's Lakewood appearance will support the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, a national nonprofit group benefiting the families of fallen soldiers, Andrews said.
Andrews said the fact that Palin's eldest son is a veteran made her a great choice for the event. Track Palin served in Iraq in 2008-2009.
Despite the circumstances of Palin's last planned visit to the Mile High City, Andrews said her political stances shouldn't be the focus.
"It's not a political day," Andrews said. "It's a day to honor our armed forces."
