This tornado hit my house !!!
Since 1950, the National Weather Service has kept records of every tornado spotted in the United States. That's 53,244 tornadoes recorded over 60 years. Of those 53,244, only 52 created F5 "incredible" damage, the type of damage that can bulldoze through buildings, leaving nothing but the foundation. F5's are very rare - only 1/10 of 1 percent of all tornadoes reach F5 strength.
Which state has seen the most F5 monsters? It turns out, it's a close race. Kansas is the only state to have recorded 8 F5's, but four states - Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa and Alabama - have seen 6. Ohio, seemingly far away from Tornado Alley, has seen 4.
Here are some recent F5 tornadoes:
- Kansas: Greensburg, May 4, 2007 (11 people killed)
- Iowa: Parkersburg, May 25, 2008 (9 people killed)
- Oklahoma: Chickasha, Oklahoma City, Moore, May 3, 1999 (36 people killed)
- Texas: Jarrell, May 27, 1997 (27 people killed)
